Hapuna Beach
This beach has frequently been voted as the best beach in the US. There is fairly easy access to the water, nearby bathrooms and showers, crystal clear water and beautiful scenery. With it's calm summer water, Hapuna is a fabulous beach for kids.

Kaumana Caves
Kaumana Caves is actually a "skylight" in a large 25 mile lava tube formed during the 1881 erruption of Mauna Loa.

According to history, the 1881 flow stopped within 1 1/2 miles of Hilo due to the intervention of Princess Ruth. She apparently prayed to Pele to spare the city while camping in front of the flowing lava.
My kids liked to call the lava "chocolate".

I would have to think that this is quite a lucky goat to live with such an amazing view!
Next time we hope to take a hike down into this beautiful valley.
